Proprietary: Adjective – Describes something owned by a specific company or individual.
Simply put Proprietary Software is the opposite of Free Open Source Software.
Proprietary Software is software owned by a company or individual (usually the one that developed it). There are always major restrictions to its use and the source code is always kept secret.
Source code is the code developed by a human using a programming language before being converted into “machine code” which is readable by the computer’s CPU. The source code is necessary as it is required to modify or improve a program.
Software that is not proprietary software includes free software which is generally the same as Open Source Software. They are accessible to everyone with no cost and with minimal restrictions.
